Odisha will face 4.9 per cent average power deficit during 2012-13, according to the annual Load Generation Balance Report (LGBR) of the Central Electricity Authority (CEA), under the Union Ministry of Power.
The total energy requirement in state is pegged at 25,798 million units (mu) against the availability of 24,523 mu, a deficit of 1,275 mu.
CEA report says, average energy requirement of the state will be more than the demand in the months of July, August, September and October. However, there will be deficit in supply during six months of the current fiscal.
The months with surplus power availability included July, August, September, October, November and December. The projected demand in these months will be 3,500 MW, 3,510 MW ,3,560 MW, 3,600 MW, 3,615 MW and 3,625 MW with the availability being 3,931 MW, 4,168 MW , 4,121 MW, 4,111 MW, 3,866 MW and 3,781 MW respectively.
The maximum shortfall of 8.6 per cent (298 MW) is expected in April, 2012. The peak period requirement for the month is pegged at 3,474 MW against the supply of 3,176 MW.

This is followed by shortfall of 5.2 per cent in February and March and 2.6 per cent in January, 2013. The peak hour requirement during the three months are 3,680 MW each in January and February and 3,700 MW in March against the availability of 3,584 MW, 3,488 MW and 3,508 MW respectively. It may be noted that for 2013-14, Odisha’s power requirement has been projected at 4,686 MW while availability will be 6,356 MW. Similarly, the state’s power availability for 2014-15, 2015-16 and 2016-17 has been estimated at 9,332 MW, 14,208 MW and 16,670 MW respectively. This is higher than the corresponding demand of 4,994 MW, 5,322 MW and 5,672 MW for these financial years.
The state government had signed MoUs (memorandum of understanding) with 29 independent power producers to secure its long-term energy need.
Among the MoU signed companies, only Sterlite Energy, a unit of London listed metals & mining major Vedanta Resources Plc, had commissioned its 2,400 MW coal-fired power station at Burkhamunda near Jharsuguda. Arati Steel has also commissioned its 50 MW coal-based plant near Cuttack. Both Sterlite and Arati Steel were together feeding 313 MW to the state grid.
