Protest continues by Bhopal gas survivors

The survivors of the Bhopal gas disaster and activists have been on a dharna at Jantar Mantar but the Prime Minister's Office is yet to come out with any concrete response on their demands, NGOs under the umbrella of Delhi Solidarity group said today. On June 9 in response to a sit-in at South Block protestors were arrested by the Delhi police. In protest, 5 days ago, nine activists started an indefinite hunger strike. "Even till today 23 of the Bhopalis are in Tihar
Jail and our attempts to secure bail for them has been met with stiff resistance from the State,'' activists said.
"This shameful state of affairs must stop. It is crucial that groups across the country unite in support to up the ante on the Manmohan Singh Government, '' Delhi Solidarity Group representing scores of action groups like AIDS India, Amnesty International, Tamil Nadu Environment Council and Yuva Samvad said in blog forums today.
Giving a call for nationwide protests tomorrow, the group said that the main demands were that the Government speak out clearly about what and when it proposes to do anything about the rehabilitation commission proposed for Bhopalis, the exact funds for the commission and the accountability of Dow Chemicals in cleaning up the toxic mess in Bhopal.
