Srinagar-Jammu road re-opens

| Even as snowfall stopped in many places, including Srinagar, on Monday, the J&K government is yet to restore electricity and water supply in most of these areas. |
| After remaining closed for two days, the Srinagar-Jammu national highway, which connects the Kashmir valley with rest of the world, was opened today for one-way traffic from Jammu to Srinagar. |
| "Hundreds of heavy vehicles were stranded at Udhampur near Jammu. The road was cleared for one-way traffic," Senior Superintendent of Police (National Highway) Mirza Amjad said. |
| Air traffic, which remained suspended on Sunday, resumed on Monday. However, the incoming and outgoing flights to Jammu could not take place today due to poor visibility. |
| There was semblance of life returning to normal in Srinagar on Tuesday as snow was cleared from almost all roads. Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad visited Srinagar on Monday and took stock of the situation. |
| "Earthquake survivors in Uri and Tangdhar should be shifted to the shelter-homes constructed for their safety and welfare." |
| The quake-affected areas of Uri and Tangdhar also received heavy snowfall compounding the miseries of the survivors. "I don't know what will happen to our families in this harsh winter. The October 8 temblor destroyed houses and killed many but this harsh winter is punishing us slowly," said Mohammad Ahsan in Uri.The harsh weather has already started taking its toll as three persons died last week. |
