14 Killed, Crops Damaged Due to Rain in North India

At least 14 people have lost their lives across North India after widespread rains battered large swathes of the region on Sunday.

While mercury levels have dropped, reports said that there has also been extensive damage to crops in several parts of the region.

Twelve of the 14 people killed by rain, lightning and hailstorms hailed from Rajasthan. Two persons were killed in a rock-slide triggered by heavy rain. It is being reported that the Rabi crop in Uttarakhand has been damaged considerably.

National capital New Delhi was in the grip of an unseasonal cold wave following showers on Sunday. Temperatures plummeted to 19.6 degree Celsius, nine degrees below normal.

 

According to the Meteorological department, the city received 3.6 mm rainfall till 5.30 pm on Sunday evening.

The minimum temperature was recorded at 16.6 degrees, which was two notches above normal while maximum was registered at 19.6 degree. Yesterday, the maximum was recorded at 27.3 degrees.

Tribal areas in the higher reaches of Himachal Pradesh experienced a fresh bout of snowfall, while rain was reported in the mid and lower hills.

The Rohtang and Kunzam Passes, the Pin Parvati Valley and Chitkul and other high-altitude tribal areas received between 10 and 20 centimeters of snow, while Keylong and Kalpa recorded snowfall of between two and three centimeters.

Keylong and Kalpa in Lahaul and Spiti and Kinnaur districts recorded temperatures of minus 5.9 degree and minus 2 degree, followed by Chamba 1.0 degree. Tourist resorts Dalhousie, Manali and Shimla recorded 2.6 degree, 4.4 degree and 5.3 degree respectively.
