Routed from his throne after three consecutive terms, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi will submit his resignation to Assam Governor P.B. Acharya this evening, thereby vacating the top post for BJP's Sarbhanand Sonowal.
Sonowal's swearing-in ceremony on May 24 will be attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi besides other chief ministers of the BJP-ruled states.
Sonowal, who is currently Union Sports Minister, will head his party's first government in Assam, ending 15 years in office for 81-year-old Gogoi.
The BJP and its allies won 86 seats in the 126-seat Assam Assembly.
