The Empowered Committee, headed by Union HRD Minister Smriti Irani, on Friday constituted a body for finalising the guidelines for food safety and hygiene under the Mid Day Meal scheme.
According to an official statement by the HRD Ministry, the committee has had deliberations with experts from the Ministry of Women and Child Development, Food Safety and Standards Authority of India and other agencies in the field and have developed a draft.
The guidelines aim to ensure basic standards of food safety and hygiene in school kitchens and address both the operational as well as infrastructural aspects.
The guidelines will also help states and union territories to focus on the procurement, storage, preparation, serving and disposal of food items.
