Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) party leaders and workers on Monday started their protest over a demand for a complete ban on liquor in Tamil Nadu.

Party workers and leaders were seen shouting slogans and holding placards demanding a ban on liquor across the state.

Almost all major opposition parties in the state have joined hands for a complete ban on the sale of liquor as the government led by All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) party has remained silent on the issue.

DMK President M Karunanidhi's recent proposal to take steps to implement prohibition if voted to power in the coming elections has been met with contempt from both the AIADMK and the PMK, who insisted that the DMK government in 1971 had first removed the prevailing dry regime despite veteran Swatantra Party leader C Rajagopalachary making a fervent plea against it.

On Thursday, Tamil Nadu Police had lathi-charged several DMK leaders who were carrying out the protest.
