Former Formula One world champion Jenson Button has paid tribute to French driver Jules Bianchi, who died today nine months after he sustained injuries during a crash at the 2014 Japanese Grand Prix.

"Last night we lost a truly great guy and a real fighter #RIPJules," he tweeted.

"My sincerest condolences to his family and friends," he said in another tweet.

Ex-Marussia driver Max Chilton, who was a co-driver with Bianchi for two years, said 'no words can describe what his family and the sport have lost', the BBC reported.

"All I can say is it was a pleasure knowing and racing you," he tweeted.

Formula One drivers Martin Brundle, Heikki Kovalainen and Allan McNish were among many others who paid their tributes to Bianchi.

The Marussia driver suffered severe head injuries when he crashed into a recovery vehicle in wet conditions at Suzuka on October 5 and was in coma since then.

Bianchi died in the hospital near his parents' home in Nice in the south of France.

Bianchi is the first F1 driver to die from injuries sustained in a Grand Prix since Brazilian triple world champion Ayrton Senna had died at Italy's Imola circuit in 1994.
