Mercedes racer Lewis Hamilton has reportedly headed his teammate Nico Rosberg one-two in their team's second practice run ahead of the season-opening Australian Grand Prix.

Hamilton was 0.157 seconds clear of Rosberg despite missing the whole first session when the car stopped with an oil sensor calibration problem on his first serious lap, although both of their performances underlined their status as favourites for this year's championship.

Rosberg was 0.35 seconds quicker than Ferrari's Fernando Alonso, who was fastest in the first practice session and the report mentioned that Rosberg and Hamilton were at least half a second a lap quicker than their rivals in the race-simulation runs in the second part of the session.

According to the BBC, Alonso took the third position while Red Bull star Sebastian Vettel was fourth from McLaren's Jenson Button despite Red Bull's troubled pre-season programme.

Vettel's team-mate Daniel Ricciardo was sixth from Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen and Williams' Valtteri Bottas, and the report added that Raikkonen was 0.7 seconds slower than his teammate Alonso.

Lotus' Romain Grosjean was only 18th, four seconds off the pace while his teammate Pastor Maldonado did not even set a time, the report added.
