The agrarian festival Onam, which marks the homecoming of legendary king Mahabali, is being celebrated throughout Kerala. The 10-day long harvest festival is believed to herald prosperity and happiness in the society.

Earlier, President Pranab Mukherjee and Vice President M. Hamid Ansari had greeted the country on the occasion of Onam.

Saying that Onam is celebrated with gaiety and enthusiasm in various parts of the country, Vice President Ansari said, "I extend my greetings and good wishes to the citizens of our country on the auspicious occasion of Onam."

The main centre of the festival is at Thrikakkara temple in Kochi city which is believed to be the ancient capital of King Mahabali.

The festival celebrations begin every year with 'Aathachamayam', the royal parade on 'aatham' day in Thripunithara.

Village artists from Kerala also perform a traditional bear dance with colourful costumes. Locals also throng the temples across the state.
