Leh: Forest dept. celebrates Forest Day by mass plantation drive

The Leh Forest department on Tuesday carried out a mass plantation drive at Council Secretariat Leh, celebrating Forest Day to spread awareness among public for safeguarding the environment.

Hill Council Chief Executive Councillor Dr. Sonam Dawa while inaugurating the plantation drive informed that Hill Council has made some road map to save the environment by planting more trees on barren land and he also stressed on the need of water conservation.

He further said 50 percent of the District Plan Fund amounting to Rs. 25 crore has been released by state on time for timely execution of various works especially agriculture based and allied.

Terming Nemroz as good occasion for Muslim community to start the farming activity he appealed to students and teachers to include plantation drive in their curriculum under the theme "each one plant one".

"Hill Council proposed to make vehicle free day on Saturday where all Councillors and government officers will come to their offices on cycles," he added.

He also expressed his concern over degrading biodiversity of Ladakh adding global warming study shows that temperature from the year 1990 to 2000 has shown increase from1.5 to 2 degree Celsius due to various factors.
