Northern Irish golfer Rory McIlroy has defended world number one Tiger Woods over accusations that he was being too 'cavalier with the rules' during this season.

Golf analyst Brandel Chamblee hinted that Woods' had cheated, in his column for a golf website, following his numerous rules infractions this year, after which Woods has threatened to sue Chamblee over his remarks.

According to The Independent, the former world number one urged the TV company, where Chamblee works as an analyst, to take action against the expert, saying that Chamblee was 'out of line', adding that he hopes that the TV channel's executives deal with Chamblee in the 'right way'.

McIlroy shot a seven-under par round of 65 to lead in the WGC HSBC Champions in Shanghai by two shots on Thursday and left a field containing 40 of the world's top 50 golfers in his wake, including in-form playing partner and recent US PGA Champion Jason Dufner.
