American footballer Michael Sam, who had come out as gay earlier this year, has reportedly become the first openly gay player to be drafted by a professional football team.
Sam, who played college football at Missouri, was selected by the St. Louis Rams during the National Football League (NFL) draft with the 249th overall pick out of 256.
According to Stuff.co.nz, moments after he was picked, Sam tweeted a picture of himself wearing a Rams cap and a pink polo shirt, along with a message saying that he is thankful to the St. Louis Rams and the 'whole city of St.Louis'.
The report however, mentioned that Sam played defensive end in college, but he is short for that position in the NFL and slower than most outside linebackers, the position he would need to transition to at the professional level.
