The rising costs of essential commodities like fruits, vegetables and milk during the holy month of Ramzan has hit the people of Srinagar quite hard.

Farooq Ahmad, a local resident told ANI, "Last year, prices of commodities were less but this year, inflation has hit us badly. The vegetable are so expensive. Tomatoes are being sold for Rs 40 now. During Ramzan, food items should be cheaper, but instead they are increasing day by day."

During the month of Ramzan, the consumption of these essential commodities increases automatically as compared to normal months. But unfortunately the high rates of these items in the markets of the Valley, especially in Srinagar, have totally soured the festivities this time.

Meanwhile, the department of Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution (CAPD) says that it's monitoring the rates of all eatables being sold in markets.

Bashir Ahmad Khan, Director of CAPD, told ANI, "We are conducting checks everywhere in the market. We are trying that the costs of vegetables and fruits comes down. I request the consumers to also check the rate list and see if prices are being suddenly increased and complain to us.
