The Supreme Court on Wednesday granted three months extension to Italian marine Massimiliano Latorre, accused of killing Indian fishermen in 2012, to stay in his country on medical grounds.
An apex court bench headed by Justice A.R. Dave considered the plea of the marine, who had recently undergone heart surgery in Italy, after the Centre said there was no objection to allow his plea on humanitarian ground.
Massimiliano Latorre and Salvatore Girone, part of a military security team protecting a cargo ship off the coast of Kerala, say they thought the fishermen were pirates and fired shots to warn them off in February 2012.
