Steve Smith who has been recalled to the Australian squad for the first Test at Trent Bridge has said that his performance in India as a cover for Michael Clarke shows that he can play for Australia in the Ashes.

According to Sydney Morning Herald, whether Smith will be staying for the rest of the five-match series will be decided after his lead into the second fixture at Lords.

Smith who was dropped from the squad in 2011, made a comeback and scored a brilliant 92 in the first innings and 46 in the fourth Test, said that his dropping in 2011 forced him to become a better player and his performance in India proved his potential.

Smith admitted that his Test career did not start well but his performance in India made him get back on the side adding that he was pleased with the way he batted and hoped to continue being at the Australian side for the summer.

According to the report, Smith is considered as an outstanding player of spin but he believes that he has improved on his batting against quality swing bowling, which he hopes he can continue to improve with each game.

The report added Smith saying that he enjoys playing in Belfast, as the slow wickets are suited to the way he plays.
