The Sochi Winter Olympics set to commence from Feb. 7 until Feb.23 this year may witness a drastic rise in web and mobile viewing, according to a communication professor from The University of Akron.
Tang Tang, an assistant professor of communication at UA who studies audiences' multiplatform media experiences during big sporting events said that since more viewers are dependent on mobiles and tablets to stream live events, access sports news and highlights , Sochi could probably be the first "fully mobile Olympics".
However, she did not rule out television viewing during the much awaited Winter Olympic.
Tang said that Digital use of Olympic content both broadened and individualized viewers' traditional television experience and, therefore, will become an increasing trend for Olympics viewing and continues to impact the audience's mega sporting event experiences.
The 2012 London Olympics was the most-watched television event, attracting 219.4 million viewers.
