Workers of the Socialist Unity Centre of India (Communist) (SUCI) on Tuesday burnt Prime Minister Narendra Modi's effigy on a railway track while protesting against the rail fare hike in East Midnapore District of West Bengal.
The protesters marched from the Tamluk Railway Station, holding party flags and shouting anti-government slogans.
"Increase in railways and gas fares will result in the increase in price of all commodities. When the BJP was campaigning before the elections, they had promised to curb inflation and cut down the cost of basic amenities. But only after a month of coming to power the BJP government has started increasing the price of everything," a protester told ANI.
The government has recently announced increase in rail passenger fares by 14.2 percent and freight rates by 6.5 percent.
The decision has resulted in various other protests across the country demanding the government to take back its decision.
