CPI inflation declines to 5.91% in March 2020

Core CPI inflation eases to 4.03% in march 2020
The all-India general CPI inflation declined to 5.91% in March 2020 (new base 2012=100), compared with 6.58% in February 2020. The corresponding provisional inflation rate for rural area was 6.09% and urban area 5.66% in March 2020 as against 6.67% and 6.57% in February 2020.The core CPI inflation eased to 4.03% in March 2020 compared with 4.08% in February 2020. The cumulative CPI inflation has moved up to 4.78% in April-march fy2020 compared with 3.41% in April-March fy2019.
Among the CPI components, inflation of food and beverages declined to 7.82% in March 2020 from 9.45% in February 2020. Within the food items, the inflation declined for vegetables to 18.63%, meat and fish 9.15%, pulses and products 15.85% and fruits 3.56%. The inflation also eased for egg to 5.56%, oils and fats 7.54% and sugar and confectionery 3.85%. However, the inflation increased for milk and products to 6.47%, spices 9.82%, prepared meals, snacks, sweets etc. 2.84%, cereals and products 5.30% and non-alcoholic beverages 2.24% in March 2020.
The inflation for housing was flat at 4.23%, while that for miscellaneous items declined to 4.43% in March 2020. Within the miscellaneous items, the inflation for transport and communication declined to 4.25%, education 3.86%, household goods and services 1.81%, recreation and amusement 4.36%, while it was flat for health at 4.17% and rose for personal care and effects to 8.85% in March 2020.
The inflation for clothing and footwear increased to 2.11%, while the CPI inflation of fuel and light moved up to 6.59% in March 2020.
