Assam Rifles officer shot by trooper, in critical condition

The commanding officer of an Assam Rifles unit was in critical condition after being shot multiple times by a soldier on Friday following a heated argument between them the previous night, police said.

Police sources said on Friday that there was a heated exchange of words between 7 Assam Rifles CO Niraj Kumar and sepoy Laishram Rakesh on Thursday night. on Friday morning, Rakesh, who hails Thoubal district in Manipur, came out of the barracks and opened fire at the unsuspecting officer.

Altogether 39 shots were fired and the officer was hit at several parts of the body. He is said to be in a critical condition in hospital.

 

Ramesh was overpowered and is in custody.

Meanwhile a powerful bomb exploded at the house of Dr C. Manglem on Thursday night at Khongman area here. Nobody was injured.

Manglem told IANS that he does not understand why he was attacked. Meanwhile local residents staged a sit in protest condemning the attack in the residential areas. There has been no claim of responsibility from any militant outfit.
