The West Bengal government said on Saturday it has sent a letter to union Human Resource Development Minister Smriti Irani supporting the decision of revocation of RTE Act's no-detention clause in schools.

Education Minister Partha Chatterjee said the state has backed the HRD ministry's decision to bring back the "pass-fail" system.

The move comes after Irani's visit to the city in September for a meeting with education ministers of Bengal, Bihar, Odisha and Jharkhand over the national education policy.

At a Central Advisory Board of Education (CABE) meeting recently, 20 state ministers unanimously backed the need to amend the RTE Act to enable yearly examinations and detention of poor performers.
