A businessman's driver has been arrested for faking a robbery in which he claimed Rs 14 lakh was snatched from him by unidentified bikers here, police said on Wednesday.

Ramu Poddar, 29, had gone to Friends Colony in south Delhi on Sunday to collect money on behalf of his employer Satya Narayan Bhutani.

After receiving the payment from Ankit Metals, Poddar hid it in his house in Shahdara. "Thereafter, he went to an underpass in east Delhi's Kasturba Nagar and injured himself in the neck and left shoulder with a knife to concoct the robbery story," Deputy Commissioner of Police Nupur Prasad said.

Poddar told police that four bikers robbed him of the money and mobile phone at knife point. Suspecting the veracity of his story, police took him to a hospital for medical opinion. The doctor pointed to the possibility of injuries being self-inflicted.

Poddar was arrested on Tuesday after he confessed to his crime.

Originally from Bihar, Poddar made up the robbery story since he was in need of money. The money was recovered from his house, the officer added.
