Cambodia, Laos agree to withdraw troops from border

Cambodia and Laos on Saturday on Saturday agreed to withdraw their troops from the border between them Cambodia had accused Laotian troops of encroaching on its territory.

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen travelled to the Laotian capital Vientiane to meet with his counterpart Thongloun Sisoulith on Saturday to diffuse tensions surrounding the presence of Laos troops in Steung Treng province, reports Efe news.

"The Lao side has agreed to withdraw troops from Cambodian territory (on Sunday), and Cambodian troops will also return with immediate effect," a statement on Hun Sen's official Facebook page.

Cambodian troops were seen riding through the capital Phnom Penh in armored military vehicles to reinforce defences at the border.

 

Phnom Penh on Friday had issued an ultimatum for the 30 troops, who have been there since April, to leave by August 17.
