The construction of power lines between Tibet and China's Sichuan province started Tuesday.

The project will cost over 6.6 billion yuan (about $1.08 billion), and is expected to be completed in the first half of 2015, Xinhua reported.

More than 1,521-km-long line will connect Tibet's Qamdo Prefecture and the Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Garze in Sichuan.

The project will solve the power shortage and transmission problems in the region.

The project covers harsh terrain and work conditions are expected to be difficult as the work will be done at an average altitude of 3,850 metres.
