A man has been arrested for shooting dead his neighbour, a retired soldier, as he feared harm to his family from the 'black magic' the latter allegedly performed, police said on Tuesday.

Police have arrested Bijender Yadav of the district's Badshahpur town for allegedly killing Subhash Yadav on January 7.

After retirement, Subhash Yadav started performing religious rituals regularly, built a small temple in his private plot for the purpose and started promising magical fixes for any issue, police said.

As Bijender Yadav was suffering from a liver problem, Subhash Yadav assured him that he would cure the disease completely by his magic and later took him to a tantrik in Rajasthan's Tijara at several occasions.

"He persuaded Bijender Yadav to donate Rs 9 lakh to the tantrik to purchase a SUV which he gave. Later, the ex-soldier asked for another Rs 1 lakh but he was not ready to pay more.

"Later, Bijender Yadav got critically injured in a road accident and Subhash Yadav claimed it was a result of 'Kala Jadu' (black magic) as he did not give the money," said a police officer.

At this, Bijender Yadav decided to eliminate his neighbour, shooting him with an unlicensed gun while he was standing outside his house.

The ex-soldier was taken to a nearby hospital but doctors declared him dead.

"We are grilling the accused on police remand to recover the weapon used in the crime," police said.
