Stockholm, Sep 26 (IANS Four individuals have been named for the 2013 Right Livelihood Awards, it was announced in Stockholm Thursday.
The four would equally share the cash award worth two million Swedish kronor (about $300,000), Xinhua reported citing a press release from the Right Livelihood Award Foundation.
The jury awarded Paul Walker from the United States "for working tirelessly to rid the world of chemical weapons".
Raji Sourani became the first Palestinian to receive the award "for his unwavering dedication to the rule of law and human rights under exceptionally difficult circumstances".
Denis Mukwege, from the Democratic Republic of Congo, received the award "for his courageous work healing women survivors of war-time sexual violence and speaking up about its root causes".
The jury recognised Hans R. Herren "for his expertise and pioneering work in promoting a safe, secure and sustainable global food supply". This is the first time that the award has gone to Switzerland.
"This year's group of laureates secure the fundamentals of human life ... These four men, whose vision, courage and commitment we honour today, show what the solutions look like," said Ole von Uexkull, executive director of the Right Livelihood Award Foundation.
Founded in 1980, the Right Livelihood Awards, also known as the Alternative Nobels, are presented annually in the Swedish Parliament "to honour and support those offering practical and exemplary answers to the most urgent challenges facing us today".
