Man supplying firearms held

A man who allegedly supplied arms to foment violence during the ongoing assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh has been arrested here, police said on Monday.

Mohammad Arshad, 38, was taken into custody on Sunday evening after he came to Seelampur in east Delhi to deliver a cache of semi-automatic weapons to his contacts.

"He has been supplying sophisticated firearms in the NCR (National Capital Region) to criminals and gangsters," Deputy Commissioner of Police P.S Kushwah said.

Twenty-one semi-automatic "Made in England" pistols were seized from him.

Arshad, a resident of Meerut in Uttar Pradesh, told the police that the weapons were to be sent for use in Uttar Pradesh where staggered elections began on February 11.
