IANS  |  Srinagar

Senior separatist leader Umer Farooq on Wednesday condemned the "nocturnal raids" by police in city during the separatist-called Human Rights Week.

The Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL), a separatist conglomerate headed by Syed Ali Geelani, Umer Farooq and Muhammad Yasin Malik, have urged people to observe the week from December 3.

Umer said on his twitter page: "Nocturnal raids by police on resistance activists and people's homes in city in connection with Human Rights Week! members ruthlessly beaten and harassed, activists arrested while others on the run! What state aggression! Even peaceful candle light protests against human rights abuses a threat to the mighty rulers whose standard response is repression, repression and still more repression!"

Meanwhile, police here detained Yasin Khan, of the Economic Alliance (KEA), a body of local traders and manufacturers.

Sources in the KEA said Khan was detained immediately after he reached his office on Wednesday morning.
