Push for same-sex marriage vote in Australia

An Australian political party has moved to push the federal parliament to vote on same-sex marriage before the end of this year, media reported on Tuesday.

The debate on same-sex marriages has been revived following Ireland's vote in favour of same-sex marriage in a referendum last week, ABC reported.

Greens member of the Senate Sarah Hanson-Young said her party's Marriage Equality Bill would be brought on for debate in the Senate on June 18, with a vote view on November 12.

"This gives members of all parties not only the opportunity to think about how they will vote on this issue but also the impetus for Tony Abbott to allow his party room to have a free vote, to vote with their hearts as well as their heads," she said.

Same-sex marriage has already been legalised in several countries, including Britain, Canada and New Zealand.
