Snapshot of India's aviation sector

The following is a snapshot of India's civil aviation sector compiled from data available with official agencies, including the Ministry of Civil Aviation:

- Ninth largest civil aviation market in the world, with a size of around $16 billion

- Carriage of 54.72 million international passengers in 2015-16 with a growth of 7.7 per cent over previous year

- Flew 168.89 million domestic passengers in 2015-16 with a growth of 21.2 per cent over the previous year

- Total freight traffic was 2,704.27 tonnes in 2015-16 with a growth of 7 per cent over the previous year

- Total number of scheduled operators in India: 15

 

- Total scheduled airlines in active operations: 10

- Total number of unscheduled operators: 122

- Air India is the flag carrier that has both domestic and international operations

- Three international carriers have stakes in Indian airlines - Singapore Airlines in Tatas-promoted Vistara, AirAsia in Tatas-promoted AirAsia India and Etihad in Jet Airways

- Only 75 out of 476 airports and airstrips have scheduled operations

- Total airports in public-private partnership: Five

- India has air service pacts with 109 countries on of flights, seats, landing points and code-share

- Total numbers of civilian aircraft: 1,216

- Total number of civilian choppers: 280

- Industry regulator: Directorate General of Civil Aviation.
