US to support Afghanistan, says senator

The US will continue to support Afghanistan, US Senator John McCain told Afghan President Ashraf Ghani Thursday.

The two discussed issues of mutual interests including the situation in Afghanistan and the region, Xinhua reported.

Ghani and McCain stressed the need to mount pressure on terrorists and extremists in Afghanistan and the region, according to a statement by the president's office.

McCain assured his country's continued support to Afghanistan. Afghan security forces will assume charge of the country's security affairs from Jan 1.
