Zambian national team head coach Wedson Nyirenda has resigned from his position, the country's football governing body said on Thursday.

"The Football Association of Zambia wishes to announce the resignation of Mr. Wedson Nyirenda as head coach of the Zambia national team with immediate effect," Ponga Liwewe, the governing body's general secretary, said in a statement, reports Xinhua news agency.

He said the process to fill the vacancy will begin soon and that the association will conclude the process in the shortest possible time to meet upcoming engagements.

Nyirenda served as Zambia's head coach from September 2016 to May 2018.

However, poor results have resulted in a souring relationship with the association, with the former coach challenging the association to fire him when the country failed to win a four-nation tournament held recently.
