Navi Mumbai, Aurangabad municipal elections throw up hung houses
NCP wins 53 seats in Navi Mumbai while Shiv Sena-BJP together win 51 in Aurangabad

Navi Mumbai and Aurangabad municipal corporations have both ended up with hung houses after elections.
In the 111-member Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) has emerged as the single-largest party, winning 52 seats — four short of simple majority. The Shiv Sena-Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) alliance has won 44 seats. Congress, which contested independently, has won 10 seats, while Independents bagged five.
NCP has already offered the Congress to join it.
After the routing in the successive Lok Sabha and state Assembly polls, the victory in the civic body election is a shot in the arm for the NCP. The architect of this victory is former minister Ganesh Naik, who was given a free hand in selecting candidates and giving tickets.
In the Assembly election last year, Naik was defeated by BJP leader Manda Mhatre, while his son Sanjeev lost to Shiv Sena nominee Rajan Vichare in the Lok Sabha poll.
For the Shiv Sena-BJP alliance, the election for the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation was a “prestige issue” to decimate Naik. But unable to pacify rebels within the party, Shiv Sena won only 37 seats; BJP got a dismal six.
The 113-member Aurangabad Municipal Corporation has been under the sway of the Shiv Sena-BJP alliance since 1998. This time, they have won 52 seats, short of a simple majority.
All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) has bagged 26 seats — a record of sorts for it. Congress has won 11 seats, NCP two; independents and other parties have mopped up the remaining.
The Shiv Sena and the BJP will have to seek the aid of independents to form the corporation. Shiv Sena Member of Parliament Chandrakant Khaire, whose nephew lost the election, said his party should not have aligned with the BJP, blaming it of not following the coalition dharma.
MIM could be the Leader of Opposition in the civic body. Its leader Syed Imtiaz Jaleel defeated Congress leader Rajendra Darda in Aurangabad Central.
