Following the order from the Indore bench of High Court, the state election commission has cancelled civic body polls in Indore.

The election commissioner has also cancelled the process of issuing of electors' photo identification cards for civic polls in Bhopal following a Jabalpur High Court order.

The commission, however, has not declared the fresh dates of elections.

The Indore bench of High Chourt today quashed a government notification that had extended Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) limit by a merger process of 29 villages in proximity of the town.

Though court had not said anything on civic polls for IMC scheduled on 28th of this month and had left the decision on state government.

The bench of Justice PK Jaiswal and Prakash Shrivastava had kept the order reserved after a final hearing on November 8 this year on two separate petitions challenging the merger.

An Advocate Anil Trivedi had challenged merger of the villages and plead to court that it was done in violation of the prevailing laws. While in another petitioner a social activist Kishore Kodwani had challenged the expansion of the municipal corporation limit by questioning the process that why only selected villages were merged with the IMC and large numbers of other villages were left out.

State government is also facing similar legal challenges for civic polls in Bhopal and Chhindwara too as district administration had merged villages in proximities of these towns.

The expert also said the political parties and candidates who had reached final stage of filing nomination papers and campaign will have to rejig their strategies.

Civic elections in Madhya Pradesh have been scheduled in two phases on 28 November and 2 December.

Tomorrow is the last date of filing of nomination papers; the candidates can withdraw names by 15th of this month. The election is scheduled to be held on 28th of this month and results will be declared on 4 December. The state election commission was not available for comment.
