Parties begin election campaigning in Nepal

Political parties in Nepal have started door-to-door campaigning to seek support in the Nov 19 Constituent Assembly (CA) elections.

A total of 6,000 candidates are contesting the elections. The candidates are canvassing by reaching voters directly, saying that their victory will ensure a promulgation of a new constitution, reported Xinhua.

Former prime ministers and top leaders of major parties are going door-to-door to seek voters' support.

People are not much enthusiastic about the upcoming elections, as the first CA elected in 2008 failed to draft a new constitution. Voters are sceptical whether a new CA will draft the constitution.

"Only the United Communist Party of Nepal-Maoist has a vision for drafting a new constitution," said Maoist leader Lila Mani Pokhrel during a campaign Saturday.

 

Political parties spent billions of dollars in the name of drafting a new constitution but only ended up dissolving the CA, which has angered the general public, he said.

Nepal is holding a second round of elections for drafting a new constitution after the CA was dissolved in May last year.
