Asked about the television footage by Bengali news channel ABP Ananda, which claimed that a safaiwala was stitching the wound, director of SSKM, Pradip Mitra said "if what is being alleged has happened, then it should not have taken place. We will inquire what the doctors on duty at the Emergency were doing at the time.
"But I want to add that some Group D staff and technicians are trained to perform such duties in extraordinary situations," he said.
A relative of the patient alleged that the Group D staff who was performing the job was doing it crudely causing a lot of pain.
"We told him, but he did not pay heed," the relative said.
The superintendent of SSKM Hospital said "interns, surgeons and medical officers are on duty round the clock at the emergency. I have no information, but I will look into the allegation."
