One person was killed and three others, including a girl, were injured when some miscreants opened fire at a market adjacent to a railway station in Hooghly district tonight.
Five youths came on two bikes at Krishnapur Market, adjacent to Hooghly station on Howrah-Bandel rail section around 8.30 PM, and opened fire, killing one unidentified man on the spot.
Three others -- student Mamoni Mondal, Amit Mondal and Babu Das -- were hit by bullets and suffered injuries.
They were taken to hospital.
As the gang escaped bursting crude bombs, locals demonstrated against increasing lawlessness in the area.
Additional SP Tathagato Das pacified the agitators and promised to nab the culprits very soon.
Police suspect gang rivalry over turf control and extortion as possible reasons behind the shootout.
