10 killed in Peru bus crash: police

At least 10 people were killed and 25 injured today when a bus crashed into a hillside in southeastern Peru, the police said.

The crash on a road linking the provinces of Arequipa and Puno came just four days after 19 people were killed when their bus went off a precipice in the southern Huancavelica province.

The cause of the latest crash was not known.

Arequipa's chief of traffic police said many of the injured were in serious condition.

Deadly crashes are commonplace in Peru, where poorly maintained roads zig-zag up and down the towering Andes.

More than 4,000 people were killed in traffic accidents in 2012, according to official statistics.
