With the arrest of one person police Thursday claimed to have foiled a bid to smuggle cattle to the Valley and rescued 16 bovines.

During the routine checking in Ghagwal area, a truck which was on its way to Kathua district was signalled to stop at highway at Tapyal, police said.

The accused driver Maan Singh accelerated the vehicle and tried to escape from the spot, police said, adding that after successful chase, the truck was intercepted near Jatwal.

During checking, 16 bovines were found laden inside the vehicle, which were being transported illegally without any permission, police said.

The accused driver was arrested on the spot and all the bovine animals were rescued, they said, adding that a case has been registered.
