269 cartons of illegal liquor seized

Altogether 269 cartoons of illegal liquors, allegedly to be used in the panchayat polls, were seized in new Mandi area here, police said today.

The excise department official and police intercepted a truck coming from Haryana at a check-post near Jolly road in new Mandi area here last evening.

Upon checking, they found the liquor consignment in the vehicle, District Excise Officer Kurendra Singh said.

One Balwant, a resident of Haryana, was arrested, while his accomplices Gurmit Singh and Nitu escaped from the spot.

Balwant confessed that liquor was smuggled from Haryana for supplying in panchayat polls, the Excise Officer added.
