A 28-year-old lion, claimed to be the oldest in the country, died due to multiple organ failure at Van Vihar National Park and Zoo here, an official said today.

Ramu's hind legs were paralysed about three months ago and it was being treated for it, Van Vihar Park's veterinarian Atul Gupta said.

The average life span of a lion is 18 but Ramu lived for 28 years, he said.

The lion was rescued from Rajkamal Circus at Korba in Chhattisgarh when it was 18 years old and brought to Van Vihar, which is also an animal rescue centre here, the veterinarian said.

According to the initial postmortem report, the feline died last night due to multiple organ failure and weakness, he added.
