30 boxes of illicit liquor seized in Chandigarh

As many as 30 boxes of illicit liquor were seized from two vehicles by a special flying squad team constituted to tighten screw on smuggling activities in the run to the Lok Sabha polls, election officials have said.

Twenty five boxes were recovered from a car and five from a multi utility vehicle coming from Punjab on Sunday, a spokesperson of the District Election Office, Sirsa, said.

The accused have been identified as Vakeel Singh, resident of Dadu, and Hetram of Bathinda.

A case under the Excise Act has been registered against the offenders under Kalanwali in police station.

Various teams, including the flying squad and static surveillance, have been formed to ensure free and fair elections in the district, the spokesperson said, adding that these teams are closely monitoring the urban and rural areas.
 

Besides this, a video-viewing team, media certification and monitoring committee, complaint monitoring control room, call centre and expenditure monitoring cell have also been put in place to ensure smooth, fear-free and transparent elections, he said.
