Five school girls drowned in an irrigation tank near Aruppukottai in Virudhunagar district today, police said.
The girls, all aged between 10 and 12 years ventured into the deep end of the tank and were sucked under as they did not know swimming, they said.
They had gone to the spot with some of their classmates after school.
