The All Assam Students' Union (AASU) today urged the Centre to provide constitutional safeguard to indigenous people of Assam and ensure the state's overall development.

The demands were placed before Home Minister Rajnath Singh when a delegation of AASU met him here.

AASU urged the Home Minister to take steps to provide constitutional safeguard to indigenous people of Assam within a year and establish central academic institutions in the state, besides making other demands.

It requested the government to ensure foolproof security along the Indo-Bangladesh border to check "unabated influx" from the neighbouring country.

It also demanded implementation of all clauses of the 1985 Assam Accord, signed by the central government and AASU, in a time-bound manner.
