Afghan national among two held for smuggling gold at airport

Two persons, including an Afghan national, were arrested for allegedly trying to smuggle into the country gold valuing over Rs 40 lakh at international airport here in two separate incidents.

In the first incident, an Afghan national was intercepted by customs officials after his arrival here on Sunday from Dubai. He had allegedly tried to clear gold weighing 844 gm out of the airport without declaring it, a press release issued by the department said.

The passenger was arrested and gold valuing about Rs 20.83 lakh was seized, it said.

In another case, a passenger was intercepted by customs officials after his arrival from Riyadh here yesterday.
 

The man, who had arrived via Bahrain, allegedly attempted to clear gold weighing 933 gm and valuing about Rs 23.03 lakh out of the airport without declaring it. The accused, who hails from Rajasthan, was arrested, the release said.

The total value of the gold seized in the two cases is Rs 43.86 lakh.
