AMFU demands land to protect interest of farmers

Press Trust of India Aizawl
All Mizoram Farmers Union (AMFU) today said that they had made appeals to the state government to expeditiously legislate a land ceiling law to protect the interests of the farmers in the state.

Talking to media persons, AMFU leaders said that due to the absence of proper land holding system in Mizoram, lands had been "mis-utilised" by rich people to receive compensation and selfish business purposes rather than utilising potential areas for agriculture and horticulture purposes.

Larger areas of arable lands were being purchased and owned by rich people who never tilled the land but owned the lands for the purpose of making money through availing compensation and other purposes, the farmer leaders alleged.

The AMFU suggested to the government that ownership of land should be given to those people who tilled the land and that land revenue should also be reduced for real farmers.
