Aligarh Muslim University has sought financial assistance from the Centre for setting up English medium schools in Uttar Pradesh as part of the birth bicentenary celebrations of its founder Sir Syed Ahmad Khan.
AMU Vice Chancellor Zameer Uddin Shah said a proposal has been sent to the Union Minister for Minority Affairs seeking financial assistance of Rs one crore per school.
"In case the Ministry does not clear this proposal for financial assistance, we will be approaching AMU Alumni associations for assisting in this venture," Shah said while addressing a function on the release of a Urdu daily.
Technical formalities for acquiring land in six districts in the state has already begun for setting up schools, he said today while addressing a gathering at the Non-Resident Students' Centre.
Proposals have also been received from another 18 districts, he said.
According to the proposal mooted by the University, a minimum prerequisite for setting up such schools would be two acres of land and a corpus of Rs 2 crore for each school, he said.
Sir Syed Education Foundation, which is headed by the AMU Vice Chancellor, will provide the platform for educational societies in different centres for managing these schools.
They will be set up under the regulations of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and will be open to students from all communities.
There will however be a provision for reservations for students belonging to minority communities, which are lagging behind others in the field of education.
