Bring Nasheed in next hearing: Maldivian court to police

Nasheed is to be tried for the "unconstitutional" arrest and subsequent detention of Chief Criminal Judge Abdulla Mohamed during his tenure as President. His arrest had led to protests and finally the resignation of Nasheed in February.

The first hearing of the case against Nasheed had been scheduled for yesterday but he had skipped the hearing and went on a tour to the south of Maldives for his Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) campaign.

Judicial Administration Department (JAD) said today that while the hearing had been scheduled, Nasheed had even failed to explain his absence from court yesterday.

Hence, Hulhumale Court had rescheduled the hearing for Sunday. Court has issued an order to produce Nasheed for the the scheduled hearing, Haveeru newspaper reported.

 

Nasheed yesterday explained his absence in court by saying that he did not believe he would have a fair trial.

The former President is currently on a trip to Southern Atolls which will end on October 13.

Last week, a court had ordered the former President to remain in capital island Male until the case against him is concluded.

The case could see him jailed or banished to a remote island and barred from future elections.
