Press Trust of India New Delhi

Civil rights group People's Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL) today denounced the killing of senior journalist and 'Rising Kashmir' editor Shujaat Bukhari, saying his "assassination was meant to derail the peace process".

The rights group said that Bukhari, a fearless critic of militaristic solutions, had supported ceasefire in Kashmir.

"He was against violence from all sides and advocated the need to bring peace through dialogue. He supported the ceasefire," a release issued by PUCL said.

Human rights organisation Jan Hastakshep said it was "ironic" that Bukhari was "killed on a day when the United Nation's first ever report on human rights violations in Kashmir was released".
