Bypoll to Srirangam Assembly seat on February 13

The bypoll for Srirangam Assembly constituency in Tiruchirapalli district, which fell vacant after AIADMK chief Jayalalithaa was convicted in a disproportionate assests case, will be held on February 13.

An official release here by Chief Electoral Officer Sandeep Saxena soon after the Election Commission announced the Assembly election in Delhi, stated that the Model Code of Conduct would come into effect immediately.

"The model code shall come into force with immediate effect in the districts of Tiruchirappalli and Pudukkottai in which the whole or any part of Srirangam Assembly Constituency going for bye-election is included," he said.

Filing of nominations and issue of notification will take place on January 19. Last date for filing nominations will be January 27.
 

Scrutiny of nominations will be held on January 28 and last date for withdrawal of candidatures will be January 30, he said.

Polling will be held on February 13. Counting will be on February 16 and the process of election will be completed before February 18, he added.

Srirangam constituency in Tiruchirapalli district fell vacant after Jayalalithaa was convicted by a Special Court in Bengaluru in the case on September 27 last year.

She was disqualified as an MLA under the Representation of the People Act.

The period of disqualification as per the Act is four years, which is the period of sentence and another six years, making it a total of 10 years.

AIADMK is all set to make every effort to romp home by a huge margin in the constituency, previously held by its party chief.

Tamil Nadu BJP has already said it would contest the by-poll.

Other parties including DMK are expected to soon spell out their strategies to try to capture the constituency held by the ruling party.
